A laptop computer is the original portable computer. A laptop is a single unit that houses the CPU, monitor, keyboard and mouse (usually a trackpad). Everything is built-in so that a laptop can be easily carried around for working or browsing the Internet on the go.

  • Portable: Laptops are much smaller and lighter than desktop and all-in-one computers. They generally weigh less than 6 pounds. Screen size generally starts around 11 inches and tops out below 20 inches. Laptops come with a replaceable battery so customers can use them without needing to plug into a power source.
  • Capabilities of a Desktop: Laptops come with a range of processor speeds and memory capacities, so they can be used as a primary computer or as a travel computer for someone with a desktop or all-in-one at home. Processor speed is generally not as fast as the fastest desktops. Hard drives start around 250GB, so they can store more files than a netbook or smaller computer and less than an all-in-one or desktop.
  • Multiple Ports: Laptops generally have a couple USB ports, a SD card reader slot and an HDMI port.
  • Internet Connectivity: An Ethernet port for a wired Internet connection is standard as is wireless connectivity, making it easy to connect online wherever WiFi is available.

Laptops can be used for virtually any computer task, from storing photos to browsing the Internet to doing work. They're a great option for customers who plan to use it as their main computer but want something portable. Everything customers can do on a desktop, they can do on a laptop. But they trade off screen size and hard drive size for the portability. However, laptops now come with enough memory that they will easily serve the needs of most consumers.
